The park has an exuberant natural beauty, with impressive landscapes and innumerable biodiversity, it is located in the northeast of the Dominican Republic, framed by the Samana Bay, of which it is a part, and has an area of 600.82 km². It is located in the territories of the provinces of Hato Mayor, Monte Plata and Samana. The public use area of the Park is in the area of the Caño Hondo community, Sabana de la Mar. The word: Haitises comes from the Arawaco which was the Taíno language and means high land or land of mountains, although the set of hills or " mogotes" has heights that oscillate between 30 and 40 meters. An important aspect is the karstic geomorphological formation that determines, among other things, a system of caves such as the caves “de La Reyna”, “de San Gabriel” and “del Ferrocarril” —also known as “de la Línea” or "del Temple" containing pictographs, bas-reliefs and petroglyphs.
